Blogging for Business: Do You Really Need a Blog?

JANICE HURLBURT

Why Blogging Fails Without a Clear Plan And How to Get It Right

Do I really need a blog? That was the question my client, Laura, asked during one of our strategy calls. She runs a small wellness clinic and, like many service-based business owners, she wasn’t sure if blogging was worth the effort.

Her hesitation isn’t unusual. Blogging takes time, time that many business owners feel they don’t have. But the bigger issue is that most blogs fail because they’re written without a clear purpose.

I asked Laura the same question I ask every client: “What’s the end goal?”

Blogging without a purpose is like sailing without a chart, you might move, but you won’t know where you’re headed. A blog isn’t just a collection of thoughts; it’s a strategic tool to attract the right audience, build trust, and give potential clients a reason to engage with your business.;

Why Blogging for Business Needs a Clear Purpose

Get Eyes on your blog, business blogging

Laura admitted she wanted better visibility and improved Google rankings. But when I asked, “What do you want someone to do after they read your blog?” she didn’t have an answer.

A blog post should always have a job to do. Whether it’s:

  • Encouraging someone to book a consultation.
  • Building authority with helpful tips, or
  • Answering common client questions.

Without that end goal, your blog is just floating around the internet with no direction.

How to Promote Your Blog for Maximum Visibility

Even with a well-written blog, many business owners skip the most important step—promotion.

“You can write the best post in the world,” I shared with Laura, “If no one sees it, it doesn’t matter.”
That’s when I shared 3 Simple Ways to Get Eyes on Your Blog Posts:

3 simply ways to do business blogging to attract attention

1. Share on Google Business Profile

Your Google Business Profile (GBP) is one of the most powerful tools for local visibility. Every time you publish a blog, post the link as a “What’s New” update.

    • Use a strong headline and 2–3 sentences as a description.
    • Add an eye-catching feature image.
    • Include a call-to-action button like “Learn More” or “Read Blog.”
    • Post consistently—Google rewards fresh content.

We also covered how to maximize visibility on Google Business Profile in this blog post, “A Google Business Profile Helps You Get Trusted Online Locally.”

    2. Feature Blogs in Your Email Newsletter

Your email list is filled with people who already want to hear from you. Give them a reason to click through.

    • Add a “New on the Blog” section with a short teaser and link.
    • Highlight a key tip or quote from the blog to spark interest.
    • Include a button or link like “Read Full Blog Here.”
    • Send a quick email blast whenever new content goes live.
    • Platforms like Substack can also help you reach a built-in audience—but only if you can commit to posting regularly.

    3. Repurpose for Guest Posts & Social Media

You don’t have to reinvent the wheel. One blog post can fuel weeks of content.

    • Break blog excerpts into short social media posts.
    • Share 1–2 graphics or images with a quick caption and link.
    • Submit a shorter version of your guest post to relevant websites or newsletters.
    • Use pull quotes as standalone visuals for social platforms.
    • Create a 1-minute video summary to post alongside the blog link.

    The Turning Point

Once Laura understood that blogging wasn’t just about writing, but about creating a ripple effect of visibility, everything changed. She decided her end goal would be to build trust and drive bookings.

Now, each blog she writes supports that purpose. She uses these three promotion strategies to make sure her content doesn’t just sit on a website—it works for her business.

    4. Blogging with Intention: Turning Readers into Clients

Laura realized she needed to blog, but she didn’t have time to manage the posting, formatting, and newsletter distribution. That’s where services like ours come in. With the proper support, blogging became more manageable and posts were being seen, shared, and actually brought in new clients.
