Why the Long Game Still Wins in Marketing

JANICE HURLBURT

Ever feel like your readers are interested—but not that interested?

They follow you, open every email, and maybe even leave a comment on your social posts. But when it comes to buying? Crickets.

It’s not just you. This quiet hesitation is happening everywhere. People are taking much longer to decide. Not because they’re unsure about you, but because we’re no longer in a quick-buying world.

We’re in what I call the long sail, where decisions aren’t made in a click, but carried forward over time like the wind in your sails.

Welcome to the “Messy Middle”

There’s always been a phase between discovery and purchase, that space where potential clients are checking you out, exploring options, weighing decisions. Some compare prices. Others ask, “Can I trust her?” or “Is this the right time?”

I call it the Messy Middle. It has gotten wider and windier. Your future client might need to see your name 10+ times before taking action and that’s the new normal.

Here’s what those longer decision timelines actually look like:

  • New followers: 20+ gentle touchpoints over 6-12 months
  • Warm leads: 5-12 nudges over 3-6 months
  • Past clients: 1-3 prompts to rebook

They’re not ignoring you. They’re paying attention more than you know—just taking their time to navigate to “yes.”  It just means they’re still deciding.

What This Means for You

Trust Takes Time (A 10-Year Story – An Example From My Own Business)

Years ago, someone joined my email list, downloaded a freebie, and disappeared, at least, that’s how it seemed. She didn’t reply to my emails, never booked a call, and never commented on a post.

And then, 10 years later, out of nowhere, she reached out and booked one of my top-tier services.

All that time, she was reading quietly, following along, and staying connected in her way. And when she was finally ready, she knew exactly who to call.

That’s the long game. That’s trust in action.

Where to Focus Your Energy Right Now

If you’re building a business meant to last, chart your course here:

Show up consistently. Keep posting, emailing, and publishing. Stay present even when engagement feels low. Your audience is watching even when they’re not interacting.

• Value over volume. Don’t chase algorithms. Create content that builds trust: insights, behind-the-scenes updates, case studies, tips your ideal clients actually need.

• Remember the silent sailors. Quiet observers often become your most loyal clients. Just because someone doesn’t comment doesn’t mean they’re not engaged.

• Build a path, not just posts. Think of each piece of content as a stepping stone, together creating a clear route toward working with you.

This Isn’t a Sprint

Running a sustainable business is like navigating open water. Sometimes the wind is behind you and everything feels fast and easy. Other times, you’re adjusting your sails, staying patient, and trusting your navigation.
The businesses that are thriving now aren’t the flashiest. They’re the ones that are steady.
Consistent. Trustworthy.

Business owners show up even when the results are quiet. They keep providing value even when the client isn’t ready yet. They understand that the decision isn’t “no,” it’s just not yet.

Stay The Course

Your future clients are out there, navigating their own journey. Some are just now finding you. Others are inching closer to a decision. A few need just a little more clarity to move forward. Don’t rush them.

Show up with confidence, compassion, and consistency. The businesses that win are the ones that stay the course.

Because the businesses that win are the ones that stay the course.

If you stay visible and true to your message, they’ll come aboard when they’re ready.
