What Disneyland taught me about online visibility

JANICE HURLBURT

I spent three days at Disneyland this past week with my family and my four-year-old grandson.

If you’ve ever been there, you know the pace. Thousands of people are moving quickly in every direction. You’re constantly checking the Disneyland app on your phone, walking to the next ride, weaving through crowds, trying to track the Lightning Pass schedule.

And somewhere in the middle of all that movement, I realized something.

I wasn’t really seeing most people.

There were thousands of them, but they all blended together as we hurried past one another. But every once in a while, someone stood out.

Maybe it was the family fully dressed in matching Disney outfits. The little girl, about my grandson’s age, was twirling in her sparkly princess dress. Or the grandparents laughing together while wearing their Mickey and Minnie ears.

They weren’t doing anything louder or bigger than anyone else. They were just more intentional. More themselves. And that made them impossible to miss.

It made me think about online visibility.

So Many Businesses Are Showing Up Online, But Blending In

Every day, coaches, wellness professionals, and health practitioners post content, update social media, and try to stay visible. And most of them are working hard at it.

But much of it blends together.

Not because they aren’t putting in the effort. But because they’re using the same messages, the same language, and the same approach as everyone else in their space.

Nothing that makes a potential client stop scrolling and think, “This person is talking to me.”

The ones who stand out? They’re not louder. They’re just clearer.

They’ve done the work of knowing exactly who they help, how they help them, and what makes their approach different. And that clarity comes through in everything they share.

The Google Search Test

Let me ask you something.

If a potential client Googled your name right now (not your business name, just your name), what would they find?

Would they land on a clear, welcoming website that tells them exactly who you help and how? Would they see a Google Business Profile with your hours, your location, a few recent posts, and some reviews? Would they find a blog post or two that answered a question they’ve been carrying around for weeks?

Or would they find a little bit of everything, scattered, inconsistent, and unclear?

This isn’t a trick question. It’s the reality your potential clients face when they’re trying to figure out whether you’re the right person to work with. And the answer they find in that first 30 seconds shapes whether they keep looking or move on.

Here’s what I’ve learned after years of helping coaches and health and wellness professionals build their online visibility: most people don’t have a marketing problem. They have a clarity problem.

When your website is unclear, everything else feels confusing to the people trying to find you. Your social posts feel disconnected. Your offers feel hard to explain. Your marketing starts to feel like shouting into the wind.

Clarity is the foundation. Everything else is built on top of it.

Your Google Business Profile Is Not Optional

If you serve clients locally, even partially, your Google Business Profile is your digital storefront. It’s the very first thing someone sees before they ever visit your website. And most business owners set it up once and never touch it again.

Here’s why that matters: Google rewards active profiles.

When Google sees that you’re regularly adding posts, updating your hours, uploading photos, and responding to reviews, it reads that as a signal. You’re open. You’re present. You’re worth showing to people who are searching in your area.

When your profile sits untouched for months, Google has no reason to prioritize it. You’re essentially closing the shop and turning out the lights, even if your business is wide open.

The good news is that staying active doesn’t require much time. A few posts a month. A seasonal photo update. A quick response to a review. These small, consistent actions add up. They tell both Google and your potential clients that you’re here, you’re paying attention, and you’re ready to help.

Think of it as leaving the lights on so people know you’re home.

Your Content Works as a System, Not in Isolation

This is where I see many coaches and wellness professionals get stuck. They’re doing the individual pieces, but those pieces aren’t connected.

Your blog, your newsletter, and your Google posts are three separate things you manage independently. They’re anchors. And when they work together, they hold you steady.

Here’s how each piece plays its role:

Your blog answers questions your ideal client is already searching for. It’s what helps new people find you through Google. When someone types “how to manage stress as a new mom” or “what to expect in a health coaching session,” your blog post is what shows up and introduces you before you’ve ever spoken.

Your newsletter deepens the relationship with the people who already know you. These are the people who’ve raised their hand and said, “I want to hear from you.” A consistent, valuable newsletter keeps you top of mind so that when they’re ready, you’re the first person they think of.

Your Google posts remind people nearby that you exist and that you’re active. They’re short, simple, and effective. And they support your Google Business Profile by keeping it up to date.

When one moves, the others hold you in place. When all three are working together, your online presence becomes something your ideal clients can actually find. Not by accident, but by design.

You Don’t Need to Be Everywhere

I know it can feel like you need to be on every platform, posting every day, showing up in every space. But that’s not how effective online visibility works.

You don’t need to be everywhere. You need the right pieces, connected and showing up consistently.

A clear website. An active Google Business Profile. A blog that answers real questions. A newsletter that keeps the relationship warm. That’s the system. And when those pieces are aligned, they do the heavy lifting for you.

That’s what being searchable and trustworthy actually looks like.

It’s not about volume. It’s about intention. The same way those families at Disneyland didn’t stand out because they were louder. They stood out because they were fully, unapologetically themselves.

Your business can do the same thing online.
